Message From the President
Last week the market experienced the largest one day drop in history.  The following day the labor department announced that 290,000 new jobs were created last month.  There is a catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and from what I continue to read the Construction Industry is still suffering from one of the largest contractions since the Great Depression.  This past year we have seen many of our clients, subcontractors, and competitors close their doors and I wish them the best.  It is a strange thing to see who survives and who doesn't, but never the less I know that the team at Hawkins is strong as ever.  We interviewed three people today and hope to hire several new talented team members in the near future.  Currently we have 23 jobs in estimating, almost 40 projects under construction, and two weeks ago we were recognized as the second BEST place to work in Tampa Bay!

Market forces aside, the Hawkins team is quite fortunate.  Our strong team members have made it that way.  As I have said many times ... "we do not plan on participating in the recession" and we mean it.  The economic climate has required us to change many ways we do business to protect ourselves from poor sub performance, vendor business failures, and the challenges of managing a growing branch office in Dallas.  Our staff has taken the brunt of the changes and my hat is off to them, for many have had to learn and implement new procedures to better protect ourselves in this downturn.  This has not been easy and sometimes you could say it was just downright difficult, but our team members have taken it in stride knowing that these changes make us stronger.

I want to thank our Clients for their continued trust in Hawkins and I take my hat off to our hard working team members.  I sincerely think that the worst of this downturn is behind us and feel positive about the future.

Tampa Bay Business Journal's 2010 Best Places to Work Awards Luncheon was held on April 22, 2010 at the New Safari Lodge at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo.  The event celebrates the companies that have been selected for fostering great workplaces and who take the initiative to ensure that their employees enjoy coming to work everyday!

Hawkins came in second place overall in the Bigger company category.  Congratulations to the entire team for making Hawkins Construction one of the best places to work in Tampa Bay.

EOC
Hawkins is in the final stages of this state of the art facility which is designed as the control command center for all fire, police and 9-1-1 operations.  It is also designed to withstand a category 5 hurricane and remain fully operational to serve as the command center for county government operations.

2story cvs
Hawkins completed this new 24-hour store and pharmacy at 1515 N.W. 13th Street in April.  This store has a second story for office space, brick facade, double drive-through and is closer to the street than the usual CVS with less parking along the street to meet city development requirements for the area.

Alabama Jobs

Hawkins is currently building two new Publix Supermarkets in Alabama.  Magnolia Place in Daphne will be a 45K SF Publix; and Westway in Dothan will be a 78K SF Publix and retail shopping center.  Both projects will be completed by the end of summer 2010.
